Blazers Lacrosse Team Looks to Rebuild This Season

As the high school lacrosse season begins across New York City, teams are stepping onto the field with new goals and renewed energy.

At UA Maker, the Murry Bergtraum Blazers have begun preparing for a season that runs from March through May. So far, the team has recorded two wins, two losses, and two postponed games in March, along with an additional win in April by forfeit.

The team is made up of a few returning players but mostly athletes who are new to lacrosse. After a season that ended in forfeits due to a lack of players, expectations are higher this year.

Benjamin Kasdan-Grollo, a 10th grade midfielder, believes the team has strong potential. “I think everybody on the team has the ability to do well,” he said. “We saw some of that in our first game, but there’s still a lot to improve on.”

Last season, the team struggled with low participation and was forced to forfeit games. However, this year’s roster has grown to 17 active players, an increase from last year. In addition, the Public Schools Athletic League lowered the minimum number of players required for a game from 15 to 13, making it easier for teams to compete.

Team captain Colin Cameron, the team’s goalie, expressed confidence after the team’s first official win. “I think we’re going to do really well,” he said. “I expect us to make a deep run in the playoffs and get more wins this season.”

Still, Cameron acknowledged early challenges. “We only have about four returning players,” he said. “Most of the team is new, so there’s a learning curve. But as the season goes on, we’re going to get better.”

New players are also optimistic about the team’s progress. “I hope we make the playoffs,” said Izaak Sills, an attack player. “We look strong, and with enough hard work, I think we can get there.”

As the season continues, the team’s success may depend on how quickly new players develop skills and how well the team builds chemistry on the field.
